Messenger
Is used to send/show messages and alerts on the local machine or to remote machines.

It has lately been used by spammers to send popup messages with advertising to internet users who doesn't have this service disabled or haven't enabled a firewall.

Note this service should not be confused with MSN Messenger. Disabling this service will not affect the operation of MSN Messenger.

Note the service might not start in the following situations:
  • If the network bindings between protocols and network adapter are screwed. Uninstall and reinstall the protocols and check the bindings.
  • If the service detects another computer with the same name, can be caused by not being registered properly in the WINS, DNS server
  • If there is a mismatch between binaries, can be fixed by reinstalling the service pack

MS Software Shadow Copy Provider
Manages software-based volume shadow copies taken by the Volume Shadow Copy service.

Note if the service is disable then NTBackup will not be able to function and an error will be posted in the Event Log.

NET Logon
Responsible for network authentication including the following sub-components:

  • Maintains a synced domain directory database between the Primary Domain Controller(PDC) and Backup Domain Controllers(BDC's)
  • Handles authentication of respective accounts on the Domain Controllers (DC)
  • Handles the process of authentication of domain accounts on networked machines.
Note if the service is disabled then client machines will not be able to discover the domain and will get the error:
You must supply a password to make this connection:
Resource: \\computername\IPC$

Netmeeting Remote Desktop Sharing
Allows authorized people to remotely access your Windows desktop using NetMeeting.

Network Connections
Manages objects in the Network and Dial-Up Connections folder, in which you can view both local area network and remote connections.

Note disabling this service will have certain sideeffects:
  • The Connections folder will not contain any connections, thus preventing dial-out access and configuration of new or existing connections.
  • The connection icon in the systray will disappear.
  • Network Location-aware Group Policies will not be available through this service.
  • Events created from media connects and disconnects will not be made.
  • Internet Connection Sharing will not function.

Network DDE
Supports network transport and security of DDE (Dynamic Data Exchange) connections.

This is mostly legacy from the old NT 3.x days, and seldom used anymore.

To access configuration of the DDE Shares run this command:
%windir&/system32/ddeshare.exe

Network DDE DSDM
The DSDM(Distributed Share Database Manager), manages the shared DDE(Dynamic Data Exchange) network conversations (from shares like: \\computername\ndde$).

This is mostly legacy from the old NT 3.x days, and seldom used anymore.

Network Location Awareness (NLA)
Collects and stores network configuration and location information, and notifies applications when this information changes.

For example, a wireless computer roaming between physical networks can use NLA to determine the proper configuration based on information about its available network connection.
NLA also proves valuable when a multihomed computer has a physical connection to one network while also connected to another network through a dial-up connection or a tunnel.

Network Provisioning Service
Manages XML configuration files on a domain basis for automatic network provisioning.

NT LM Security Support Provider (SSP)
Local Security Authority (LSA) for the system (The service name is only used for historical reasons). The LSA handles all authentication before a user is allowed to access a resource, which can be done in several ways:
  • NTLM - LM, NTLM and NTLMv2
  • Kerberos
  • SChannel - SSL & TLS
  • Digest
